Chapter Eighty Four
Chris looked around the quiet waiting room and glanced at his watch. It was a little after ten o'clock, but Chris couldn't sleep. Justin, Lance and Joey were asleep from the long day in the chairs across from him, and JC was sitting beside him, watching the TV with no sound.
"JC, I am going to go get something to eat," Chris said. "I'm feeling pretty weak. It's been a long day."
"I'll come with you," JC offered. "I could use something to eat."
They got up and walked over to the elevator. There was a sign taped to it.
"Closed!" JC exclaimed. "It wasn't before. I can go... the stairs might be too hard for you."
"I can handle it," Chris said. "It's only two floors. Let's go."
They opened to doors and walked down the first flight. "Hold on." Chris said, grabbing the railing and leaning over.
"Are you okay?" JC asked.
"Yeah, just give me a second," Chris said. A few minutes later he stood back up. "Okay, let's go." He took another few steps, and his legs gave out. He went face first down the stairs, and hit his head on the railing.
"Oh, shit," JC said, running down the stairs beside Chris. "Are you alright?" A huge gash was bleeding on Chris's forehead.
"I'm alright," Chris said.
"You're bleeding heavy," JC said. "What happened?"
"I don't know, all of a sudden, I couldn't feel my legs." Chris answered.
"Can you walk?" JC asked.
"I think so," Chris said. JC helped him stand up, and his legs gave out again.
"Okay, Chris, hold on, I am going to get a nurse," JC said, rushing to the door at the top of the stairs.
Chris nodded and a few minutes later JC returned with a nurse. They helped him up and brought him into a room. She took a cloth and wiped the blood from his forehead.
He winced. "Come on... that stings."
"What happened?" another nurse asked, getting some gauze from the drawer.
"My legs gave out," Chris said, as the nurse who was wiping his head took his blood pressure.
"Have you over exerted yourself in anyway?" she asked.
"Well, I just got over mono," Chris said. "And I'm still a little tired. Earlier today... I sort of tried to save my friend from drowning, and it really made me tired."
"I think that's all it is," she said with a smile. "You'll be fine, we should just clean you up. You're head will be wrapped and please, REST. That's all you need, so do it, okay?"
Chris gave her a weak grin. "Sure. Thanks."
She helped him up and JC grabbed his arm. "I'll help him."
"Thanks," Chris said again, and they walked out of the room.
"What do you want to eat?" JC asked him. "I'll go get us something."
"Here," Chris said, handing him a few dollars. "I want a Sprite and something... I don't know, surprise me."
"Okay," JC said, taking his money and walking downstairs.
